A major problem with massive pulmonary embolism is how fast it can turn life-threatening. Large clots block blood flow in the lungs, strain the heart, and can quickly lead to collapse if not treated aggressively. Speed, precision, and the right technology make all the difference.
The Perpetual Help Medical Center – Las Piñas marked a significant milestone by successfully performing its first-ever mechanical thrombectomy for a massive pulmonary embolism. The procedure utilized the advanced Penumbra Indigo™ System, guided by the high-resolution imaging capabilities of the Artis Icono platform—bringing together both expertise and cutting-edge technology in one life-saving intervention.
This complex case was handled by a multidisciplinary team of specialists working in sync. The patient was under the care of Cardiologist Dr. Maria Victoria Turla, alongside Vascular Medicine Specialist Dr. Emilita Lapuz and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. James Patrick Diaz. Anesthesiologist Dr. Carmelita Lunas ensured the patient’s stability throughout the procedure, while the Catheterization Laboratory team provided critical technical and procedural support.
Using the Penumbra Indigo™ System, the team was able to navigate directly to the site of the clot and effectively remove the massive obstruction from the pulmonary arteries. The Artis Icono imaging system played a key role, delivering precise, real-time visualization that allowed for accurate device placement and safe clot extraction.
The success of this procedure highlights not just a technical achievement, but a major step forward in the hospital’s capability to manage high-risk cardiovascular emergencies. Mechanical thrombectomy offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional treatments, reducing recovery time and improving outcomes for patients facing critical conditions like massive pulmonary embolism.
This milestone reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to advancing patient care through innovation, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
Congratulations to the entire team for this breakthrough achievement.
